Understanding SEO Long Tail Search Tactics

If you want your website to do well in the search engines then you will be looking at search engine optimization (SEO). One topic that commonly comes up in relation to SEO is the “long term search”. The fact is it is an important concept to understand if you want to get the best from SEO.

What is a Long Tail Search?

The first time the term “long tail search” was mentioned was in a Chris Anderson article for Wired. When Anderson was discussing this idea he wasn’t actually referring to SEO, but in relation to the fact that online places like Amazon make a lot of cash selling things that aren’t their best sellers. And the term “long tail” got its name from the graph which shows how items are sold on the Internet.

The best sellers are seen at a peak on the graph and then all other items show a long tail. The items which are not as popular are shown all along this long tail. And the fact that most of the sales are along the tail rather than on the peak was the point that Anderson was trying to make. This means that a business like Amazon can make more money on their sales of the less popular items when compared to the popular items.

When it comes to SEO and the “long tail search” it has been used to describe how some people act when they are browsing the web. When it comes to most items there will be some popular keywords that are frequently used.

But just like Amazon sales most of the keywords used are not the most popular but those in the long tail. So for those wanting to make sure that their website is as SEO friendly as it can be, they will have to also take into account the less popular keywords. For example if your website was selling sports shoes, it would pay to focus on more specifc keywords and not just “sport shoes”.
