online bankingIn today’s technological world we experience many conveniences that a short while ago were not available. Online banking is one of those conveniences that is not only time-saving but helps our budget. At our convenience we can choose to do our online banking, 24 hours a day whether it is day or night. No longer do financial institutions control when we do our banking. Now we can bank where ever we have access to the Internet whether it is from home or work.

The Convenience of Online Banking

At a touch of a button we know exactly where we stand with our finances. We can monitor our any of our account balances. Our statements can be viewed online and even downloaded which saves time. If you use a banking software program you can download your latest account activity when you want. It’s easy and secure to pay our bills online or make bank account transfers when necessary.

Online Alert Notifications

You can request that your financial institution send you specific alerts by email. These alerts range from notification of payments due, when your statement is ready for viewing and downloading, when a deposit is received and when a check is cleared. Other alerts include notification when there are any account changes such as an email address or password modification. Your financial institution can also warn you if there is any out of the ordinary ATM activity.

Secure Banking

To keep your financial information secure it is advisable that you don’t save your logon information on your computer unless you have password protection software.  It’s not uncommon for you to amass a lot of different websites that require a variety of logon credentials.  Because of this you might want to look into using a software program that secures that information. If you choose not to use a password protect program, the next best thing to do is memorize your logon information such as your username and password.

Whenever your online banking activity is finished make sure that you log out from the financial institutions website. Most financial websites have a safeguard that automatically logs you out after a period of time which improves your security online.

Passwords should be a mixture of capitol letters, small letters, numbers, and symbols that are difficult to guess and unique to each site.  It is advised to change your password on a regular basis.  I recommend using a secure password software program to ensure the safe-keeping of all of your private data.

Be Leery of Phishing Emails

Unscrupulous people and thieves use an unethical technique known as “phishing” to get people’s financial data. Phishing emails look legitimately like they are coming from your financial institution and they have been successful in gaining access to your personal logon information and financial data.

You are instructed to click on the link in the email to log-on and provide your information to what you presume is your financial institution. When you verify your information on this bogus site your financial account becomes jeopardized.  As a precaution never use links within the message that comes from your financial institution. Always log-on with either a bookmark you have saved on your computer or by typing in the URL so that you can be assured that you are entering a legitimate financial website.

Online banking is a great convenience that can save you both time and money. Because it makes it so easy to keep a handle on your finances the number of people that use it is increasing daily.
