Did you know that many scientists would like to discover light-catching materials in order to transform more of the sun’s power into carbon-free electrical power?

A new study described in the magazine Applied Physics Letters in August this year (released by the American Institute of Physics), explains how solar energy could potentially be collected by using oxide elements that include the element selenium. A team at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California, inserted selenium in zinc oxide, a relatively affordable substance that could make more effective use of the sun’s power.

The team discovered that even a relatively small quantity of selenium, just 9% of the mostly zinc-oxide base, significantly increased the material’s effectiveness in absorbing light.

The primary author of this study, Marie Mayer (a 4th-year College of California, Berkeley doctoral student) states that photo-electrochemical water splitting, that signifies employing power from the sun to cleave water into hydrogen and oxygen gases, could possibly be the most fascinating future application for her efforts. Utilizing this reaction is key to the eventual creation of zero-emission hydrogen powered automobiles, which hypothetically will run only on water and sunlight.

Journal Research: Marie A. Mayer et all. Applied Physics Letters, 2010

The conversion effectiveness of a PV cell is the percentage of sunlight energy that the photo voltaic cell converts to electricity. This is very important when discussing Photo voltaic products, because enhancing this efficiency is vital to making Photo voltaic power competitive with more conventional sources of energy (e.g., non-renewable fuels).

For comparison, the very first Photo voltaic products converted about 1%-2% of sunlight power into electrical energy. Today’s Photo voltaic products convert 7%-17% of light energy into electrical power. Of course, the other side of the equation is the dollars it costs to produce the PV devices. This has been enhanced over the decades as well. In fact, today’s PV systems generate electricity at a fraction of the cost of first PV systems.

In the 1990′s, when silicon cells were two times as thick, efficiencies were much smaller than these days and lifetimes were reduced, it may well have cost more energy to create a cell than it could generate in a lifetime. In the meantime, the technological know-how has developed considerably, and the energy repayment time (defined as the recovery time needed for generating the energy spent to produce the respective technical energy systems) of a modern photovoltaic module is usually from 1 to 4 years depending on the module type and location.

Usually, thin-film technologies – despite having relatively low conversion efficiencies – obtain considerably shorter energy repayment times than traditional systems (often < 1 year). With a common lifetime of 20 to 30 years, this signifies that contemporary photo voltaic cells are net energy producers, i.e. they produce significantly more energy over their lifetime than the energy expended in producing them.

About the writer – Rosalind Sanders publishes articles for the swimming pool solar covers blog, her personal hobby weblog focused on recommendations to help home owners to spend less energy with solar energy.

As you may know, California wines are known worldwide for their outstanding taste and quality. If you are planning to have a wine tasting party, you can’t go wrong choosing a California wine.

This is a two day wine tasting event with 342 wineries pouring some of the best available anywhere. On Sunday the public is welcome, but on Monday it is restricted to the “trades“ which includes restaurants, bars, and retail stores looking for new inventory to bring to their establishments. Also included in the Monday event is the media.

My husband and I have volunteered to work this event for 5 years and we have never been disappointed in what the wine tasting event has to offer. This year we were assigned to winery check in. We got the opportunity to meet and talk with many of the winery personnel. These hard-working people are a really great group of individuals to get to know.

After our volunteer shift we were able to taste some of these great wines, which is one of the advantages of volunteering to work at this wine event. We had to be very choosy with 342 wineries from which to taste.

The northern California wine tasting event this year was a success that was enjoyed by many. Keep this event in mind if you live in the San Francisco area or are planning a trip there next year in August. You will not be disappointed if you attend it.

On doing research into genealogy I discovered familiar terms that I glanced over with the idea that I understood the term. Funny thing was that I really had no idea what they meant. I mean, I thought I did. But when I had to come up with a definition for my son I really had not a clue what some things meant.

So, I thought it might be interesting to tell of what I discovered.

First off I will assume that everyone is comfortable with their knowledge of what a father, mother, sister, brother is. But I discovered some did not know the meaning of Aunt, Uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, second cousin and the oddest one of “once removed.”

So the following are definitions that will help when working with family trees.

Aunt- This is the person that is your mother or your fathers sister.

Uncle- This is the person that is your mother or fathers brother.

Cousin- This can also be known as first cousin and are the people in your family that are the children of your aunts and uncles. They will have two of the same grandparents as you. Cousins share a blood relationship.

Second Cousin-These people will have the same great grandparents as you but not the same grandparents.

Third, fourth and fifth cousins will respectively have the same great great, great great great and great great great great grandparents as you.

Grandfather- This person is the father of your mom and dad

Grandmother- This person is the mother of your mom and dad

Great Grandfather- This person is the father of your grandmother or grandfather

Great Grandmother-This person is the mother of your grandmother or grandfather.

Once removed or twice removed- This is a bit more difficult to understand. But it simply means for “once removed” that there is one generation between the two people. “Twice removed” means there are two generations. You and your first cousins are in the same generation which happens to be two generations below your grandparents. So the word removed is not part of it.

Look at it this way, my cousins would be the sons/daughters of my parents’ siblings. My cousins once removed would be my parents’ cousins. My cousins twice removed would be my grandparents’ cousins. And so on.

Let me give you an example that might make it even clearer to you. Let’s use “third cousin, once removed” to explain. The words third and once are descriptive here and tells you something particular about your relation.

The word third describes how many generations are between you and the ancestor that you have in common, that you share with this cousin minus one for the same generation. This means that a third cousin has the same great-great grandparents as you do.

Now for the second once removed part. This tells you simply the generational difference between you and your cousin. Once meaning that your cousin is one generation away and twice meaning they are two generations away and so on. In our example this means that you are one generation apart from each other and you share great-great grandparents.

Now when you look at your genealogy and see you have 14 cousins, “four times removed” you will know what they are talking about.

My husband and I love to travel; we consider traveling “the good life”. Last year we were lucky enough to be able to spend three weeks in Kauai and we had the time of our lives. When it comes to the important things in life it doesn’t get much better than that.

What makes this particular travel even more special is that we were able to share quality time with our daughter, son-in-law, and our two fantastic grandchildren who were 7 years and 5 years old at the time.

Some of the adventures we had included a tour of the island and a boat trip to the Fern Grotto. We visited beautiful beaches, had picnics, swam, and boogey boarded. We went kayaking and hiked to some of our favorite beaches including the Queen’s Bath and the Secret Beach.

In the evening we had tasty dinners, watched sunsets, were entertained with “shows” put on by our grandchildren, and played lots of Mexican Train dominos. This is the good life and it doesn’t get much better than this.

Kauai, known as the “Garden Island”, in our opinion is the most beautiful of the Hawaiian Islands. We like the Princeville area the best and that is where we stay when we visit. Lucky for us we get enjoy the good life and are able to visit there every other year.

We drive to the south end of the island and visit Poipu Beach at least once during our visit, but we are always happy to return to the north end because you just can’t beat the Napali Coast. You can almost hear Bali Hai calling you.

This is just a reminder to all of you to take some time and “smell the roses” in your life and spend quality time with your loved ones. Enjoy the good life.

The evolution of paper has given me no choice but to provide readers with an Amazon Kindle review. The mediums which we use to read and write have evolved from stone walls, to papyrus and eventually to paper. In recent years this evolutionary process has stepped into the digital environment and the Amazon Kindle is at the forefront of this technological development. Critics have always reviewed books by only giving regard to the print while ignoring the paper. This will be a review of the modern version of paper by paying particular attention to Amazon’s Kindle.

What is the Amazon Kindle?

The Amazon Kindle is an ebook reader which allows the owner to read a digital version of magazines, newspapers or books. The Kindle was first released by Amazon in 2007 and there have been two major models released since the original. Each new Kindle has been altered and improved to make the reading experience more authentic and comfortable. The latest model is the Kindle DX and it offers a range of features which previous models did not offer.

How do I use the Kindle?

Books or newspapers are downloaded directly onto the Kindle through Amazon’s Whispernet network. The download is free of charge and the only cost involved is with regard to the book that you select to buy. When a text has been selected it is transferred onto the Kindle immediately. Amazon’s Kindle has made it possible to buy a bestseller from the comfort of your couch at home.

How many books are available in Kindle format?

There are over 600,000 ebooks available for the Amazon Kindle. The titles range from classics (which are sometimes offered free of charge) to modern bestsellers. Bestsellers often go for far less than the paperback equivalent, making the Kindle a profitable purchase for the avid reader.

How many books can I store on a Kindle?

The Kindle 2 can store approximately 1,500 books whereas the DX is capable of holding more than 3,000 texts. Until now, it was unfathomable to carry 3,000 reading options with you at a given time. The Kindle is a slim, neat electronic library already owned by over 3,000,000 people, and the list of new owners grows daily.

How much does it cost?

Any Amazon Kindle review would be incomplete without reference to the price of the device. The Kindle 2 is currently available for $189 and you can pick up the Kindle DX for $379. Amazon has always offered used options and these go for much cheaper. People have been buying second-hand books for generations and there is no reason why this tradition can’t be carried into the digital age.

Reading has shifted from paper to the digital environment. Old piles of dusty books are being replaced by reading platforms like the Kindle. The modern residential library does not require an entire room; it doesn’t even require the space that a single book would normally take up.

In today’s technological world we experience many conveniences that a short while ago were not available. Online banking is one of those conveniences that is not only time-saving but helps our budget. At our convenience we can choose to do our online banking, 24 hours a day whether it is day or night. No longer do financial institutions control when we do our banking. Now we can bank where ever we have access to the Internet whether it is from home or work.

The Convenience of Online Banking

At a touch of a button we know exactly where we stand with our finances. We can monitor our any of our account balances. Our statements can be viewed online and even downloaded which saves time. If you use a banking software program you can download your latest account activity when you want. It’s easy and secure to pay our bills online or make bank account transfers when necessary.

Online Alert Notifications

You can request that your financial institution send you specific alerts by email. These alerts range from notification of payments due, when your statement is ready for viewing and downloading, when a deposit is received and when a check is cleared. Other alerts include notification when there are any account changes such as an email address or password modification. Your financial institution can also warn you if there is any out of the ordinary ATM activity.

Secure Banking

To keep your financial information secure it is advisable that you don’t save your logon information on your computer unless you have password protection software. It’s not uncommon for you to amass a lot of different websites that require a variety of logon credentials. Because of this you might want to look into using a software program that secures that information. If you choose not to use a password protect program, the next best thing to do is memorize your logon information such as your username and password.

Whenever your online banking activity is finished make sure that you log out from the financial institutions website. Most financial websites have a safeguard that automatically logs you out after a period of time which improves your security online.

Passwords should be a mixture of capitol letters, small letters, numbers, and symbols that are difficult to guess and unique to each site. It is advised to change your password on a regular basis. I recommend using a secure password software program to ensure the safe-keeping of all of your private data.

Be Leery of Phishing Emails

Unscrupulous people and thieves use an unethical technique known as “phishing” to get people’s financial data. Phishing emails look legitimately like they are coming from your financial institution and they have been successful in gaining access to your personal logon information and financial data.

You are instructed to click on the link in the email to log-on and provide your information to what you presume is your financial institution. When you verify your information on this bogus site your financial account becomes jeopardized. As a precaution never use links within the message that comes from your financial institution. Always log-on with either a bookmark you have saved on your computer or by typing in the URL so that you can be assured that you are entering a legitimate financial website.

Online banking is a great convenience that can save you both time and money. Because it makes it so easy to keep a handle on your finances the number of people that use it is increasing daily.

This isn’t uncommon, every non-profit organization still has to pay for buildings, help, utilities, insurance and other expenses. So what is a non-profit debt settlement solution and how are they different from other debt settlement groups?

Non-profit settlement groups and for-profit settlements operate the same basic way. The non-profit group provides free debt counseling and prepares an income analysis. This analysis is the first step to becoming debt free. It will help you establish a budget and recognize areas where you are spending too much.

Using this information, the non-profit group negotiates with your creditors to work out a lower interest rate, or even a lower settlement amount. They then handle the settlement process. This is done through monthly payments that accumulate in an account. Once there is enough in the account to pay off one creditor, the money is withdrawn and the process is started over again with the next creditor. In these ways, profit and non-profit are the same.

The non-profit and for-profit settlement groups differ in their income source. Non-profit companies do not engage in business for a profit margin. The federal government regulates their income and expenses. These regulations are used to make sure that they are not making more than it takes to keep their business up and running. They receive funding from private individuals, some from fees, and in some cases even for a percentage of what is paid to the creditors. To encourage the non-profit company, they receive a tax-exempt status. This is to encourage them not to profit from what they are providing. The benefit is that this lack of profit motive often keeps the costs low.

For-profit agencies can charge what they wish. They want to pull profits so that they can offer more of a return for their investors. They make money in much the same way as the non-profits, only they do not take donations. The advantages to using a profit agency is that they may have more power to negotiate have the capital to cover shortfalls, and be able to hire attorneys that may benefit the negotiation process.

No matter which route you go, freedom from debt can be just around the corner. It is up to you to take the initiative and decide which is best for you.

Lastly, by thoroughly researching and then comparing several debt settlement providers, borrowers will be able to qualify and determine the service that meet your specific financial situation, moreover, besides the cheapest interest rate available on the market. For example, see our last debt settlement service review: Debt Help 101 Review.

Nonetheless, it is advisable to work with a trusted and reputable debt counselor before a decision is made, this is the way you save time through their seasoned experience. This article is proudly sponsored by Hector Milla who is the editor of the Government Grants For Debt Relief website – visit and see his top rated debt settlement service recommendation.

When your credit card company discharges a portion of what you owe, it is called credit card debt forgiveness. Getting approved for the program is not an easy task. The program comes with a price. If the debt on hand is more than $600, you will automatically be issued a 1099-C. It is a given that the government will be taxing you for the forgiven debt since it is considered as income received.

Credit card debt forgiveness has also been known to cause one form of emotional turmoil or another to a borrower. But the end result of getting the opportunity of being free from debt in the earliest possible time is certainly worth it.

Know that you are not the only one experiencing seemingly insurmountable debt problems. In fact, not so long ago, President Obama has “forgiven” debt incurred by many major organizations that have been lending money to the American public. It may come as a surprise to you, but after the Obama loan forgiveness package has been enacted into law, billions of dollars of debt have been eliminated in a single day!

Credit card debt forgiveness is not only for major creditors. Individuals who are experiencing insurmountable debt problems may also take advantage of the program. The Government’s Stimulus Program is enacted into law for one main reason: to help each American rise from the credit crunch that has swept our nation lately. Yes, we live in a time where credit is the one of the main reasons our economy is alive.

How Borrowers Can Take Advantage of the Government’s Loan Forgiveness Program

The process in applying for credit card debt forgiveness is fairly simple. There is no need to get in touch with a government agency. All you have to do is contact your creditors. As a rule of thumb, credit card companies should divulge information to clients who are in need as to how much of their debt can be discharged in relation to their financial situation. To qualify, the borrower should have at least $10,000 of credit card debt.

With credit card debt forgiveness, or what is commonly known as debt settlement, it is very possible to eliminate 50% or even more of your credit card debt. Imagine how soon you can eliminate your debt if it was reduced in half. You may find yourself free of debt within 2 to 5 years.

There are reliable debt settlement agencies that can help speed up the process of credit card debt forgiveness. In fact, these kinds of services are very rampant nowadays, that you can easily find one online. But do beware of companies who charge incredible fees on the onset. Legitimate debt settlement agencies offer a free no obligation first consultation. They will give you detailed information about exactly how much reduction you will get from your outstanding loan and a realistic plan on how to achieve paying of the remainder of the loan. And with most debt settlement companies, their services include consultation on how to rebuild your credit score even after you have finished paying off the totality of your debt.

Eliminating credit card debt is not a far away dream. Just act on it now and you will be on your way to living a debt free life as soon as 12-36 months from now.

You can find the best home improvement contractor by simply following these helpful tips: ask friends for recommendations, visit home improvement shops, refer to the reviews found online, look through your prospective contractor’s web site, gather several choices of service providers, and make the final assessment of your possible choice.

When you look for a home improvement contractor, it is wise to go over this list of helpful hints:

Ask friends for recommendations

Ask your friends for information about any contractor they wish to recommend to you. A homeowner who had a direct experience with a particular remodeler is another excellent source of referrals. You can find out if this specific remodeler is concerned about time and if he has rendered the best services so far.

Take a trip to home improvement shops

The majority of home improvement shops, like paint shops, tile shops and home furnishing stores, have a number of contractors in mind that they would be happy to recommend to you.

Refer to the reviews found online

Search the net for any reviews available for the contractors you are considering. From them you will get an overview of how well they manage their remodeling business.

Look through your prospective contractor’s web site

Aside from going over online reviews, you can also check out your prospective contractors’ web sites. You can size up their performance and credibility by the way their online sites look like. A competent contractor will be very much willing to show before and after photos of his work as documentation of every project.

Gather several choices of service providers

Plan to have at least three choices for contractors. Schedule an appointment with each one of them to discuss their credentials and get references. Make sure to call all the references and homeowners on the list so you can verify all of the information the contractor gives you.

Make the final assessment of your possible choice

When you are on a meeting with prospective contractors, take note of how they rank with regards to following:

* Is the contractor answering your questions directly and honestly?
* Are you comfortable with this particular remodeler?
* Is the contractor prompt in replying to your calls?
* Is the contractor able to recognize the kind of service you need?

Lastly, when you have made your pick, make sure both of you sign a contract. This is for your protection and his.
